Time: 3:00 - 4:30p.m. "Singapore-ness" as an art-object is a fluid concept shaped by the nation's blend of multiculturalism, pragmatism, and a drive for social cohesion. Unlike Western art traditions rooted in ideological movements, Singapore’s aesthetic leans toward heritage, symbolism, and harmonious functionality. Art that resonates with the public often features familiar local imagery HDB flats, kopitiams, multicultural symbols, and Singlish and reflects lived experiences, from nostalgia to subtle critique. While state narratives favour unity and progress, the public often values authenticity and emotional truth. Artists like Sean Dunston’s Samsui Women wall mural exemplify a shared space, celebrating resilience without overt politicisation. Singaporean artists navigate the tension between provocation and preservation, aiming to educate with empathy and engage without alienating. As SG60 approaches, the arts play a key role in shaping a nuanced identity-fluid, hybrid, and deeply human beyond clichés and into the everyday stories that define Singapore.
